There’s been considerable debate about the safety of placing a fire pit on decking, with some people suggesting placing the fire pit away from your timber deck and in your backyard. However, should you choose to put a portable fire pit on your timber deck, be smart and take all precautions to keep from risking your family’s safety.
Safety Considerations When Using a Fit Pit on Decking
- Never burn a fire on a windy day.
- Always tend to your fire. Never leave it, even for a minute.
- Ensure that there is no fire ban in place.
- Have a fire extinguisher in close proximity.
- Have a bucket of water or garden hose ready for use.
How to Safely Use a Fire Pit on Your Timber Decking
- Select a safe location – away from your house, balustrade, roof and sheltered from any wind
- Prepare the area – by moving any furniture away from fire pit
- Always use a fire pit pad and place the fire pit over the fire pit pad
- Be careful lighting the fire
- Always place a spark screen over the top of the fire pit
- Always tend to your fire pit and never leave it
- After you enjoyed your fire pit, always ensure that the fire is completely out, by using either water or sand, before you retire for the evening
If using a fire pit on your timber deck still represents a risk for you, then a suitable alternative may be to use an outdoor heater.
